  Capability Assessment


The Indian Institute of Economics was established in 1953, as a National Centre for Theoretical and Applied Economic Research, with a group of economists led by Prof. S. Kesava Iyengar, Prof. Nizam’s College, and Economic Advisor to H.E. the Nizam. The Institute was set up as an autonomous N on Profit Society registered under the Public Societies Registration Act 1350F with registration No. 5/1953 dated 7th March 1953.

The Institute was notified as an Educational Research Institution by erstwhile Government of Hyderabad vide notification No. 33/5 dated June 1953 issued by the Secretary to Government in the Education Department. Grant-in-Aid was provided annually from 1954-55 onwards. The Institute received recognition from Osmania, Andhra, Sri. Venkateswara and Mysore Universities, as a Research Centre for Ph.D. work.  Several economists who started their career as Research Assistants at the Indian Institute of Economics are now Heads of Departments in various Universities and serving various Government organisation.

In pursuance of its objectives, the Institute established a Library with over twelve thousand volumes. It receives about forty Indian and International Journals.  It is considered as one of the valuable reference Libraries in Hyderabad, providing good support to Research Scholars in Economics and other Social Sciences.

The Institute’s focus has moved to empirical research, evaluation and assessment studies. In the last five decades, the IIE, has carried out nearly 200 research studies and surveys in the areas of Agriculture, Rural Development, Command Area Development, Urban Development, Industrial Development, Employment and Industrial Relations, Water Supply, Power Tariff, Pharmaceutical Pricing Export prospects and Scheduled Castes Development. These surveys and studies have been financed by the Government of A.P., various Ministries of Government of India, ICSSR and Public Sector Undertakings. In recent years, some Private bodies have also sponsored studies.  The Institute organizes at regular intervals Seminars and Conferences on the themes of contemporary significance like Public Expenditure Management, Banking Sector Reforms etc.

Since 1958, the Institute has been publishing a journal ASIAN ECONOMIC REVIEW, which has an international academic audience, and a reputation for publication of quality research articles from Universities in India and other countries. The Journal has an Editorial Advisory Board, headed by Sri. M. Narasimham, former Governor Reserve Bank of India. It receives a grant in aid of publication from ICSSR and subscription support from several Universities and Research organisations in India and several other countries.
